Cataloging Questions for Forum

I've added brief notes (from memory, so they will be sketchy & possibly inaccurate!) under the questions we discussed. Feel free to revise, expand, add to my notes as you see fit.  - thanks! Lynn W.

I added a few things from my notes. I hope others will add, too! --Fran

Cataloging - How do you deal with Millennium 1st time use reports?

notes from discussion: Most people work on them "as they have time". Some run the report on a regular basis (daily, weekly, monthly?)

LW (Lynn Whittenberger): at Marquette we run the reports daily & have staff work on them.

Cataloging: How are people dealing with online media (podcasts, video)? Are you adding to your collection or not? How are you cataloging these (as electronic resources or video or audio or...)

notes: most are not cataloging online media; in some cases this is due to bandwidth issues and concerns about connecting to materials through the catalog

Since the Library of Congress is no longer establishing authority records for title series, how are new authorities being created by other libraries/consortia?

notes: some libraries will create local series authorities if needed, but if series is not problematic (no conflicts, not wierd tracing) won't bother creating an authority.  We also discussed the MARBI(?) proposal to drop the 440 & trace all series as 490/8XX's

Some libraries send simple authorities to a NACO funnel but cannot take the time to do all of the work needed for a more complex authority

LW: We establish some series locally, but most not

Cataloging/Authority Control - What services do other libraries for their authority control? Are they happy with them? Do they have procedures developed for that? and how often do they do it?

Authority Control--What do the different codes mean when one validates headings?

notes: the codes are listed in the manual at page# 105691  (I'm not sure if it's ok to post them all here since it's a public wiki.  There's a link to my email in the directory under Waukegan Public Library, so you can contact me if you have questions. -- Fran)

I'm interested in knowing how libraries handle computer games (Playstation, WII, etc.) in their collections.

notes: most are adding games in CD-ROM/DVD-ROM format.  Since most don't get game consoles at their workstations (why not? ;-D!) - cataloging is done from disc surface/container

Cataloging tips

I'd like to know how people address catalog clean up projects at their libraries.

notes: most people said  "as they have time" (gales of laughter from the group)

How does one generate display constants from the indicators for fields 780 and 785?

Tagging – Are any libraries using tags as well as subject headings?  How are they added to the records?  Can anyone do it – patrons, staff, only certain people?  Are the tags searchable?

Music CD Classification – What system do people use – ANSCR, Dewey, LC, home-grown genres?  What works and what doesn’t?

notes: Arlington Heights uses a home grown system, Milw. Public uses Dewey. Both noted the difficulties of classifying classical recordings, search styles of people looking for classical recordings vs. people browsing the popular music areas

Blu-Ray DVDs – Are any libraries adding Blu-Rays to their collections?  How do you indicate the format in the record and/or on the packaging?

Games – What formats are people collecting – CD-ROM, X-Box, PlayStation, WII?  Do you limit to certain ratings or types?  Are they popular?

Clean-up Projects (authorities or cataloging) – What are your “favorites” (or at least the ones you try to do regularly)?  How often do you do them?

E-books: Add links to print version (if owned), or create separate records? Pros & cons of either way.

Adding Table of Contents to Bib. Records. – do you use a 505 note or add 970 fields? Index title & author? Or just title? Or…?

RDA – is anyone looking at this yet? Or are we all waiting for the final draft (this summer – maybe…)?

notes: general discussion on when RDA would be public - how long it would take to implement (would it be implemented). LW: I note that it's taken 10 yrs for FRBR to begin to trickle into library-land thinking - I'm going to guess that it takes RDA as long. Harvey noted that, without implementation from Innovative, there's not much we can do.

LW: we have a set schedule for common database cleanup / circ cleanup tasks, ranging from tasks done monthly (URL checks, in-transit items) to annually (withdrawns, material type code cleanup)
